Welcome To Narosia

posted Jul 22, 2020, 6:57 AM by Shane Harsch   [ updated Jul 22, 2020, 10:18 AM ]

I posted a summary of what's happening with Narosia over on the Narosia FB page for any who are interested.
Narosia has always had a focus on culture as part of the character background, and that hasn't changed. However, the concept of race is gone in its entirety. The wonderful thing: I don't miss it.

The other major change involves the history of Narosia. The colonizer/savior narrative is gone, and good riddance. The history is cleaner and stronger for it.

I have long been a fan of gender-neutral language. That is now found throughout. More than that however, I am incorporating this idea within the cultures and the cosmology. In a world defined by fluid magic, why would anything be sexist by default? Some of the gods are female, some male, but about half just aren't. Why would they be? When culture assumes equality, why would your terms of authority necessarily incorporate gender identity. For example, a Grand Regent is the monarch of the Regency of Agthor. How is that not more fantastic than the King of the Kingdom of Agthor? I love it, and I hope fans of Narosia will too.

As I have been re-imagining this, it's been refreshing and wonderful. Will I get it right? I certainly hope so, but I don't assume I will. Before we go to publication I will have other eyes on it, professional and lay. I already have my daughters reviewing it and so far I haven't gotten any "get it together, old man" glares (yet).

Social media warning: none of this is up for debate. If your reaction to this is anger or condescension: go be you somewhere else. I would love nothing more than to share with anyone how I got here and what this means for character development and all the other wonderful crunchy bits of RPGs. Any delicate snowflakes that melt in the radiance of a fantasy world celebrating diversity in all its fantastic color can kindly, but with absolutely no respect whatsoever, *ahem* show themselves out.

NOVA6 Core RC5

posted Jun 5, 2020, 10:45 AM by Shane Harsch

We're excited to share Release Candidate 5 with you today.

The Character Sheets in Downloads have also been revised to match, including a form-fillable PDF.

We're talking with our editor about starting that process which is what we wanted to be ready for once we launch the kickstarter.

Unfortunately, one of the biggest revisions between RC04 and RC05 was the damage system--we blew it up. Well, not entirely. The core of damage vs soak and the relative values remains intact (we're not monsters). However, what damage means has changed. That means there is a whole new damage result system. Our initial test have all been positive and I am confident in the new approach. In some ways it's simpler, in other ways it is a little more detailed, but in a positive manner.

For example, when you take stress you note the duration of the stress when you mark it (instead of just an "X"). This allows for short term effects and also better aligns with other, non-damage, types of effects. Take Scene [S] stress, put an S in the box. Take Lasting [L] stress, put an L in the box. Pretty simple.

Now it's out there for you--let's get out and play.

What's Happenin'!?

Whew, busy fall/winter. U-Con, Metatopia, finalizing NOVA6. I meant to post updates after all these things, but...nope.

Good news is Release Candidate 04 of NOVA6 Core is posted! This is (fingers crossed) the final version going into Kickstarter. Cover, bookmarks, typos squashed--no major issues that we can see. Rules are (pretty) clear and organized.

We also signed Darren Watts to not only expand my NOVA6 Powers framework, but also write the Supers genre book and setting. Very exciting stuff. We (Darren's team and my team) are currently playtesting the Powers stuff so we can share a functional version with you as part of the Kickstarter.

Kickstarter we are also targeting for February now (with all the work on Powers and Core slowing us down a bit), but we are ready to make it happen! Yay!

So, follow us on facebook, or check here from time to time. We will have more to share hopefully soon.

Origins 2019 Events

DCC-Narosia: Ruins of Baradahm                                                 6/13 (Thu) & 6/14 (Fri) at 9am
Your village was attacked. Repelling the attack you give chase and find much more than you bargained for. Will it lead to glory or gloom? This introductory adventure for the Narosia DCC Primer will introduce the world of Narosia to fans of Dungeon Crawl Classics and set the stage for the forthcoming Village of Gillkas campaign.

Atomic Sky: What about Bob?
  6/13 (Thu) 7pm & 6/16 (Sun) at 11am
Do you have what it takes to survive the retrofuture atomic wasteland? Are "Our friend the Atom" and "Better living through chemistry" your survival mantras? NOVA20 is a D&D 5E variant for classless, modern play, combining many of the mechanics of NOVA6 with D&D. This makes the game a little more tactical than either 5E or NOVA6, with the objective of replicating the play experience of games like Fallout.

Discworld NOVA6: Honey, I Shrunk The City Watch                         6/13 (Thu) at 7pm & 6/15 (Sat) at 7pm
In Ankh-Morpork, Sektober Fools Day is dreaded for jokes done around the city, and the free reign of the Fools Guild.  The players are freshly minted City Watchmen in Ankh-Morpork from around the Disk, such as Tsort, Uberwald, Hublands, Djelibeybi, Krull, and the Wyrmberg.  As new members of the City Watch, you get handed the bizarre calls.  But when a rumors  of invisible robbers smell anything but funny.  Tracking the trail of the tricksters may end in a deadly pie fight or worse.   In this story, Watchmen don’t get any bigger.  Humor and role-playing emphasized, knowledge of Discworld not requisite.

Cowboy Cthulhu: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fall of '86                 6/14 (Fri) at 7pm
Thee Roosevelt, Sheriff Seth Bullock, Red Cloud, and two academics from the east seek to stop an apocalyptic winter from falling on the west in November '86. A NOVA6 Core Cowboy Cthulhu adventure. Here we combine the NOVA6 Wild West themepack with the Investigative Horror themepack to create a western, Lovecraftian story.

Psychotronic Attention-Span Theatre: Revenge of the Undead Scuba-Diving Zombies     6/14 (Fri) at 7pm
In Psychotronic Attention-Span Theatre, the player charactrers are actors playing roles in low budget web series, weekly TV show, or movies, where the setting/story changes each week.   This ranges from the serious where the actors cope with jumping into different time periods or alternate worlds, to the cheesy late night bad B-Movies.  The ‘director’ (or mad scientists, or devil with a TV remote, or evil sentient computer running the holodeck) control the shooting schedule and Extras, but it’s the actors that control the action with Nova6 Core’s unique stunt system.  Whether it’s striving to escape the clutches of invading Martians, battling mutant radioactive lobsters attacking Tokyo, or defeating machete-wielding madmen in the bayou, the actors are the stars of the show, despite hokey special effects and extras that can’t remember their lines.
In this installment, join the zany reality show gang from ‘Total Drama Island’ cast as survivors of an undead scuba-diving zombie attack, when they inexplicably return to the cursed island for a second season: Revenge of the Undead Scuba-Diving Zombies.   The special effects are hokey, the catch-phrases stale, the props second hand.   This ain’t Shakespeare - it’s Psychotronic Attention-Span Theatre."

Meddling Kids: 13yrs Later                                                                 6/15 (Sat) at 9am
Of course it was old man Smithers. Years pass, and you realize that it was more than an old man in a mask. Using NOVA6 Core we will create characters (or bring your character from last year) using the Meddling Kids (teen investigative horror) themepack. This is part 2 of the "Those Meddling Kids and the Sleepy Lake Monster" adventure from last year. You need not have played that adventure to enjoy this one.

NOVA6 Core Beta 10

posted Feb 24, 2019, 3:30 PM by Shane Harsch   [ updated Feb 24, 2019, 3:32 PM ]

Well, we thought Beta 09 was going to be the last before the Kickstarter, but we found a few more things during our NOVA6 Supers playtest. Since we still had some time, we thought we'd post one more to be as complete as possible. We've posted it in Downloads.

We got our proofs back from Amazon and they all look good. So, I'm uploading this version to Amazon, ordering one final set of proofs, and then we will make this available for purchase.

Remember, if you have any questions, the NOVA6 Open Forum on FB is a great place to reach us.

NOVA6 Core Beta 09

A few more easy tweaks and typos identified, as well as some layout issues. We've posted it in Downloads.

This is the last version before our Kickstarter.  Once we get the print proofs back, we will make this available for sale as a print beta via Amazon.

Take a look. Let us know if you spot anything weird, off, or confusing.

NOVA6 Core Beta 08

posted Nov 17, 2018, 9:11 AM by Shane Harsch   [ updated Nov 17, 2018, 9:12 AM ]

During the prep and run at U-Con we identified some typos, some clarifications here and there, as well as getting the quicksheets and screens posted.

We also got the proofs of Beta 07 back from the printer and that prompted some formatting changes. We've got another one on the way before we close out work on this for now, so this should be solid.

This might very well be the last version before our Kickstarter.

Take a look. Let us know if you spot anything weird, off, or confusing.

NOVA6 Core Quicksheet

posted Oct 29, 2018, 12:49 PM by Shane Harsch

Woohoo! NOVA6 Core Quicksheet!

The quicksheet is a reference for you during the game, providing a summary of specific rules that might come into play, as well as some of the few charts that exist in the game.

The Quicksheet is available in the downloads section in both Letter and Digest sizes.

There has even been a sighting in the wild of a rare tri-fold, digest-sized GM screen.

NOVA6 Core Open Beta

posted Oct 24, 2018, 8:29 PM by Shane Harsch

Wow, what a year. We started out thinking that our focus was going to be on one thing and then it became another. This is a good thing.

As we worked what we are now calling NOVA6 Expanded, we realized the way players were engaging with the game was through a small side project to simplify NOVA6, especially for convention play.

The more we worked on the rules the more we realized this streamlined version of the rules was actually the core of the game. This core was the thing we should focus on first before the expanded rules, splat books (like cyberpunk, sorcery, etc.), or really anything else.

This is now NOVA6 Core

This game is complete and will form the core of the work that we do on NOVA6 moving forward. NOVA6 Expanded is still a thing, and is what we are playtesting to support the new edition of Narosia, but it was definitely important for us to figure out what actually made the game work and put that in as concise a format as we could (and I'm sure our editor will take it to the next level).

We will be posting character sheets, Themepacks, and other updates for NOVA6 Core to the NOVA6 site as they are completed.

We would also love to see you at any of the upcoming events we are attending.

NOVA6 Expanded Beta 04 is Here!

posted Jan 15, 2018, 12:38 PM by Shane Harsch   [ updated Oct 25, 2018, 5:39 AM by S Harsch ]

The expanded rules are now feature complete. Any revisions at this point are expected to be more about clarification than actual mechanical revision.

All of the core elements we intend to cover with these rules are now here and should enable you to run any kind of game, subject to your ability to create any features required for your genre.

We are working on NOVA6 Universal Powers as well as Sorcery and Steel as our first two expansions for the game. This will provide a set of universal effect guidelines and the ability to run a supers game, while Sorcery and Steel is focused on magic, fantasy races, and other fantasy tropes.
